Sound EditorThe sound editor allows one to view and edit sounds. Unwanted pieces may be clipped out, new sounds may be recorded, volume changed, etc.
The sound editor displays an oscillogram of the sound, where time runs along the x-axis and the air pressure is represented on the y-axis. Large changes mean a strong sound. The image may be enlarged (zoom) in order to see details in the sound waves.
A sound in the mixer is taken into the sound editor by marking it before the editing begins.
In order to edit the sound, you need to select a section to work with by clicking and dragging. You will see that a portion of the sound is marked with yellow color.
- The button with a scissor means that you will cut away your selection.
- The button with the two sheets of paper means that you are copying what you have selected. If you are cutting in the middle of a strong sound, you will hear a light click. it is a good idea to cut in a soft section of the sound. Cutting and pasting is a good sound processing technique that is often used in electronic music, particularly in so-called concrete music. You can remove a small part of a sound and use it in completely different contexts.
- The button with the notepad on it means that you will insert your selection at the point or in the region you have selected.
- The buttons with trumpets on them mean that you will fade the sound in and out. This is useful for removing clicks in the beginning and end of a sound. It works gradually, so click several times if you think the effect is too weak.
- The buttons with loudspeakers on them will increase or decrease the sound level for the area that you have chosen.
- The arrow that turns will turn your sound backwards.
- The lower buttons in the middle are to stop or start playing and to record.
- Off and on buttons in the lower right close the entire sound editor program without saving the changes you have made. The OK button will save the changes.
